A child aged 8 is receiving care in Dadaab camp
Handicap International has been supporting disabled people in Dadaab camp since 2007. Because of the severe famine, living conditions are worsening and the needs are dramatically increasing. Here is an overview of our actions on the ground in Dadaab.

“Around 1,300 Somali refugees are arriving, totally exhausted, at the Dadaab camp every day. They have often travelled 300 to 400 km in the heat. Many children with disabilities are carried in wheelbarrows.” Bernard Franck, a Belgian physiotherapist working for Handicap International, is seeing needs grow daily on the border between Kenya and Somalia.

Following an evaluation of the risks posed by mines and unexploded remnants of war in the area, Handicap International has been leading an emergency risk education mission dedicated to these weapons targeted at the populations under threat since early April. The association is now expanding its teams in the field and the area covered by its mission.

More than 400 diplomatic representatives from 81 countries attended the first intersessional meetings of the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions from 27-30 June 2011. They joined representatives from UN agencies, the ICRC, and a CMC delegation of 100 campaigners from 40 countries to discuss progress against the ban.
