Leaving for the field

Before packing your bags

You have attended one of the information sessions and it has confirmed your decision – you want to apply. The simplest way is to send us your CV by clicking here and to fill in the request for information. Your application will be registered in a database and viewed regularly. However, we recommend that you apply for any new job opening that you are particularly interested in.

After this first stage, if your application is selected, you will meet with several people for a series of interviews and tests specific to the function for which you are applying (language test, technical test, etc.).

Once you have got successfully through the interview and test phase, you are ready to sign your contract. For certain functions, you will get specific training for your position before going to the country of mission. This training will explain:

  •  the function-specific tools (order management software, accounting software, etc.);
  •  the context of your mission and the specific technical aspects.

You will also attend a series of briefings about both the context and the function you will be occupying, to give you the information you need before leaving for the field.

Now is good timing to prepare for departure: passport, visa, vaccinations…

Upon arrival

When you get there, the Programme Director will welcome you and explain the special regulations in force in the country, safety rules of course, as well as rules of behaviour and life in society. Don't forget that, as an expatriate, you represent Handicap International and you must make sure to respect the customs of the country. The objective is to smoothly integrate the team and to fulfil your assignment under the best conditions.

Coming back

An assignment goes quickly. Unless you renew your mission, coming home means finding a place to live, a job, and possibly a school for your children. This can be difficult, especially after spending several years in the field.

You must also fulfil a series of administrative formalities to maintain your rights. Handicap International can help you in this area and will advise you on the steps to take.

You will also have a debriefing to assess what you have achieved during your mission. This will be an opportunity to look back on your experience and what you have learned. Would you like to leave on another mission or continue your career in Belgium, what kind of career development did you plan?  Therefore this is a crucial appointment.
